Trou Aux Cerfs

Trou aux Cerfs is a dormant volcano found on the edge of Curepipe. The volcano has a well defined cone and crater and is 605m (1,985 ft) high. Its crater is around 350m in diameter and is 80m deep. The volcano is considered as a dormant volcano, which has been formed millions of years ago and was active until 600,000 to 700,000 years ago. The Crater Lake is encompassed by luxuriant pine forests which add to the beauty of this volcano. The summit is easily accessible via a small street that also runs around the crater. Pavilions, benches and well-tended lawns invite you to stop for a rest or even a picnic. A walk around the crater (around 90 m deep) allows visitors to enjoy the panoramic view both of Curepipe with its beautiful houses and gardens, and Mountains of Rempart. Usually, the locals enjoy doing a morning trek to appreciate the natural beauty and to breathe the fresh air.

What To See in the Centre

Eureka Creole House

The Eureka House is a unique historical site which attracts many visitors. This Creole mansion dates back to the 19th century and was owned by both British and French aristocrats. The colonial house is located at Moka in a magnificent garden surrounded by waterfalls of Moka River and the Moka Range. The Creole mansion was restored and opened to the public as a museum in 1986.

By visiting the mansion you will discover the antique interior décor which reveals the well-preserved furniture made with ebony and mahogany, finely painted chinaware, old ceramics, books and rugs, and photographs of daily life. The mansion consists of 109 doors, which includes 14 rooms featuring antique furniture, and Kashmir carpets hanging on the wall.

What To See in the Centre

There are areas dedicated to music, art, antique maps, Chinese and Indian house wares and quirky contraptions like a colonial-era shower. Visitors can also stroll through the immense garden of the Eureka House. Besides the museum and part of the ravine that has been transformed into a restaurant, the Maison de l'Étoile is another jewel of heritage. The Domaine de l'Étoile features an open veranda with mountain views, and a large living room with fireplaces.

Domaine Des Aubineaux

A visit to Domaine Des Aubineaux takes you back to the colonial period in Mauritius. Built in 1872 this colonial mansion is located in the outskirts of Curepipe. It was passed down through several generations of the Franco-Mauritian Guimbeau family who made their fortune out of the tea trade. It remained their home until the final resident Myriam Guimbeau who passed away in 1999.

Two years later it was meticulously renovated before opening it as a museum.

Today, Domaine des Aubineaux serves as the first stop on the country’s famed Tea Route and sits above a neatly landscaped lawn backed by giant camphor trees. With its twin turrets, tall shuttered windows and imposing presence, this historical complex is one of the last remaining plantation houses in Mauritius to have kept all its period furniture, antiques and decorative objects in situ.

What To See in the Centre

A guided tour takes in various rooms including Mrs Guimbeau’s bedroom, her husband Philippe Guimbeau’s study, a glazed verandah, living room and formal dining room complete with boat-hull ceiling and 30-seater oak table. The former billiards room now houses a tearoom, and in the surrounding grounds are the old stables, which have been converted into a meeting room and shop.

Next door stands the original distillery which is used to produce essential oils; specifically camphor for which 25 kilos of leaves are required to distil 25ml of oil.

Mauritius Glass Gallery

A visit to the Mauritius Glass Gallery is where you will meet recycled glass bottles turning into masterpieces. Situated next to the beer factory, the gallery receives several tons of glass monthly which are recovered by Phoenix Beverages Limited.

What To See in the Centre

This glass gallery inspires ecological glass based products where skilled craftsmen create unique handmade piece of arts made of glass. There you will find interesting glass products for sale. You can watch the traditional glass-blowing process or have a glass model made from an imprint of your hand or foot in sand too.

The hand section of the gallery displays several glass made hand prints of famous individuals such as writers, sportsperson, and TV personalities. Do not be surprised to see Richard Branson’s hand print!
